The Science of Smell Killers

Your brochure says that Smellkillers can eliminate odours from hands, rooms etc. using just air and water. Do they really work?

Yes, Smellkillers are made out of a special high-grade stainless steel. As soon as they come into contact with air and water they act like a catalyst that neutralizes all odours - just like the catalytic converter that reduces harmful emissions from your car’s exhaust.

Does the Smellkiller become less effective over time?

No, the Smellkiller works without any chemical additives or other supplements, and if used correctly it will effectively eliminate odour for at least a lifetime.

Are there any health risks if I use the Smellkiller regularly?

No, according to latest research, if used properly the Smellkiller is absolutely harmless for your health. There are no side effects known to date. The Landesgewerbeanstalt Bayern (the Bavarian state office for commerce and trade) even issued the Zielonka Smellkiller with a “no-health risk” certificate in August 2002.

What happens to the odours?

You have to think of odours - similar to a string of different-sized pearls which form a pattern - as substances that develop their scent as organic chains. If you break the string and you are only left with individual pearls then the pattern disappears. If you break the “odour chain” then the scent disappears as well. Because odours are organic substances no hazardous waste is created, except what could be regarded as below the measurable level of “odour compost”.

How often do I have to refill the water for my Smellkillers?

Water is subject to the natural process of evaporation. You should therefore check regularly to ensure that your Smellkiller’s bowl is half-full, or that it’s sponge is moist. We recommend weekly-controls for the “Classic” or “XL”, e.g., when watering your pot plants. The container for the “Humidifier” is larger and only needs to be refilled every two weeks, depending on how much you heat. The sponge for the “Comfort Smellkiller” or the “Universal Smellkiller” should also be checked every two weeks, according to the time of the year. If the sponge is still moist, you can be rest assured that the Smellkiller is busy at work eliminating odours. If, however, it’s hard and feels like a nail-file, then immerse the sponge in water for a few minutes.

How should I clean and take care of my Smellkiller?

Basically, Smellkillers are very easy to maintain. However, because some areas have very high levels of lime in their tap water, unsightly limescale may develop in the bowl. In order to prevent this wash the bowl every 4-8 weeks with detergent or a vinegar-based cleaning agent.

Tip: You can even place the Smellkiller and its bowl in the dishwasher.

My husband and I built a house up in the mountains and we put a lot of effort into building an ecologically and environmentally-friendly house. Recently some friends gave us the WC Smellkiller as a housewarming present. Can I really just hang it the toilet and not worry about polluting our environment?

Smellkillers are absolutely free of chemicals and received very positive reviews in the German ecological consumers’ journal “Ökotest” in February 2003. They are made out of high-grade stainless steel and do not emit any harmful byproducts. Moreover, they don’t just cover unpleasant odours but neutralize them exactly at the source. So go ahead, feel free to use your new WC Smellkiller with a clear conscience.
Tip: New home owners are often confronted with the fact that furniture or floor wax, and sometimes even new furniture, can emit strange odours that some people are sensitive to. To eliminate those new-home odours, we recommend you use the Smellkiller XL with rubber bowl that neutralizes odours in rooms up to 60 sq. m.

I own a cat and even though I clean her kitty litter box regularly it still smells “musty”. Can the Smellkiller get rid of this annoying odour?

Absolutely. We recommend the Universal Smellkiller that is easily attached to the outside of your kitty litter box. Immerse the sponge in water, then slip it inside the container. You won’t even notice your kitty’s “scent marks” after using the Smellkiller.

I have been wearing the Shoe Smellkillers for more than three months and I am very happy with the results. I am now thinking of buying some for my girlfriend whose feet sweat really badly. What can you recommend?

We have to realize there’s a difference. Sweaty feet often create unpleasant smells, and almost 70% of Europeans suffer from embarrassing foot odour. We heartily recommend the Zielonka Shoe Smellkillers to your girlfriend because it neutralizes odours at the source, and doesn’t just cover smells like conventional foot deodourants.
But: Remember the Smellkiller does not stop feet from sweating; the amount you perspire is controlled by the glands in your body. If your girlfriend is worried about her very sweaty feet she should consult her doctor.

I suffer really badly from my pollen allergies, does the Zielonka Smellkiller reduce the level of pollen in my home or office?

Unfortunately, no. The Smellkiller can eliminate very diverse scents or odours, but it is powerless against allergy-causing pollens.

My son is a heavy smoker. A friend at work recommended the Smellkiller XL, so last Friday I went out and bought one. I then placed it in my son’s room while he was out. I filled the bowl, according to the instructions, with just enough water so that the surface of the Smellkiller remained dry. I then opened the windows and left the Smellkiller in the room. Two days later, on Sunday, I went back into the room and it still stank of stale cigarettes. I’m not convinced that the Smellkiller works, or did I do something wrong?

First of all, thank you very much for your letter because what went “wrong” happens to many of our customers, but most of them don’t contact us for help or assistance. It is a natural reflex to open windows to air rooms that smell bad, particularly when they stink of stale cigarettes. But, similar to humans, the Smellkiller can deal with only so much oxygen in order to function most effectively. So the next time you want to rid your son’s room of all unpleasant odours, simply place the Smellkiller in the bowl with some water as you already did, but keep the windows and door closed for a night. The next morning the room is sure to be free of all stale cigarette odours, at worst it might smell a little bit stuffy. You can then open the windows for a quarter of an hour as you normally would, and your son will be amazed when he comes home!
